| Abstract: | 'Many examples of Stewart Maclennan's work in watercolour, wood-engraving, and lithography could be inserted into the wakefield collection and not suffer by comparison. It was good hearing that this subtle craftsman and most modest man had been appointed Director of the National Art Gallery. He inherits a building slowly being rehabilitated after its wartime occupation, and a collection of dubious value. Mr. Maclennan has a long fight ahead of him, but if impeccable taste and unshakeable integrity can give us eventually a good art gallery - this is the man for the job.' |
