dc.description.abstract'Turning the specific into the ordinary characterises a suite of works David Mealing painted while still a student at Elam School of Fine Arts (1966-1969). Each one featured banal suburban environments with equally pedestrian titles such as Freshly Mown Lawn and Painted Fence. They were inspired by David's own commute to the city and back from Auckland's North Shore suburbs; this 1968 work was the view from the window at his flat.'-
