dc.description.abstract | 'Ralph Hotere. Manos Nathan. Robyn Kahukiwa. Michael Parekowhai. Derek Lardelli. Moana Maniapoto. These are a few of the names synonymous with Māori art. Prominent leaders in their fields, their works have continuously lifted the profile of mahi toi in Aotearoa and across the world. With each generation comes a new wave of practitioners and the definition of 'contemporary' evolves yet again. With many of today's artists coming through Pākehā institutions, academia, cross-cultural knowledge and inter-disciplinary skill-sharing is giving unique opportunities to Māori creative. Holding on to the tikanga, kawa and whakaaro of the traditional, Māori art is taking new shapes and exploring new spaces. Five young artists share their contributions to the next wave of the Māori arts.' | - |
