Abstract: Speaks to the development of arts education in Otago during the period 1870 to 1876 and the central roles of John Hislop, architect of the Otago Education Scheme and David Con Hutton, first appointed Drawing Master in establishing New Zealand's first School of Art. As the school developed encouragement was made to extend the syllabus beyond 'copying' which had been promoted by Hutton. As the student roll expanded so to did the curriculum, incorporating metalwork and pottery alongside drawing.
