Abstract: | When a youth, Petre Van der Velden was apprenticed to a firm of lithographers. He drew on the stone, we may be sure, for long hours each day until he was thirty years of age, when his employers discharged him. He then devoted his whole time to painting, and rapidly gained recognition. His pictures were accepted for exhbition in the principle galleries of Holland. Representatives of the house of Goupil, who regularly journeyed from London to Amsterdam for the purpose of buying pictures for exhibition and sale in England, purchased much of his work... |
