dc.description.abstractThe 1932 Exhibition of the Canterbury Society of Arts contained three hundred and ninety-four pictures in oils and water-colour, and one work of sculpture. There were no drawings, etchings, wood-cuts, lino-prints, pottery, jewellery, metal-work or designs for architectures, interior decoration or textiles. On occassion in the past htere has been a separate exhibition for "black and white and crafts." I was informed that none was contemplated this year. With all deference to the painters of pictures, it seems that the titles in the plural, "Society of Arts," "Academy of Art," and so forth, convey the impression that all picture painting is artistic activity, that is almost the only one, therefore all that is not painting is inartistic.-
