Title: | Mind the Gap : Billy Apple : Between British and American Pop, 1960-64 |
Publisher: | INZART/The University of Auckland Library=Te Tumu Herenga |
Abstract: | Here Barton tracks Apple's shift from London to New York in 1964, and his connections to David Hockney and Andy Warhol, to form an investigation of a specific period of the artists work, within the framework of the writing of art history : "Crucially, it is a case study of one artist at one moment, examined for the information it yields and the readings it enables. Such specificity enables the real conditions of context and circumstance to appear in all their complexity; the anaylsis that follows proves the potential of history writing to do more than organise individual practices according to fixed categories". This essay is the third in a series addresssing the early work of Billy Apple, and his contribution to pop art. |
