dcterms.description.bioWilliam Francis Robert Gordon was born in New South Wales in 1848. He moved to New Zealand in 1867, working in the Telegraph Department before transferring to the Department of Lands and Survey in New Plymouth as a survey draughtsman. He died there in 1936. A skilled illustrator, Gordon’s sketch of Te Whiti-o-Rongomai is held at the Alexander Turnbull Library while some of his letters, notebooks and sketches are at Puke Ariki Museum and Library in New Plymouth.en
