Abstract: | Speaks to the exhibition 'It Shows Really, a Rather Beautiful Spirit' (21 January - 21 May 2017) at the Sarjeant Gallery, following Susan Frykberg's artist residency at Tylee Cottage. Discusses work developed during Frykberg's residency in which the artist responded to the work of Whanganui painter Edith Collier (1885-1964). Likens Collier's position as an artist in a predominantly male art world in the early 20th Century, with Frykberg's position working in the sonic arts in the 1970s. Discusses collaborative work between Frykberg and video artist Brit Bunkley. |
