dc.description.abstractSpeaks to a recent exhibition by Warwick Freeman entitled 'Just Monkeys' (2016) at Bowen Galleries. Explores references in the exhibition including to Colin McCahnon's painting 'Candle in a Dark Room' (1947). Examines the artist's relationship with the term 'Pākehā' and how his work engages with a New Zealand identity. Discusses Freeman's jewellery practice in relation to the Bone, Stone, Shell movement of the 1980s. Considers the appropriation of Māori culture, and discusses Freeman's practice as engaging in a wider art-historical conversation beyond jewellery.-
