dc.description.abstract | Three texts speak to issues facing New Zealand waterways. 'Where the River Bends' by curator Harry Culy introduces the exhibition and its focus on the diverse ways in which artists have pictured New Zealand rivers, streams and waterways in the exhibition. In 'Into the River' Wiremu Puke reflects on childhood experiences at his local river and warnings passed down of taniwha. Comments on the mistreatment of the natural waterways describing the Waikato River as the most environmentally damaged landmark in New Zealand. In 'If the Land is the Flesh' Christine McFetridge considers the relationship between communities and waterways in New Zealand and Australia. Discusses work featured in the exhibition in relation to environmental concerns regarding the neglect of waterways and damage caused by farming, residential development and industry. | - |
