Abstract: | This essay speaks to two exhibitions which ran concurrently at Blue Oyster Art Project Space from October 6 to 30 2016, 'Duty Free Art' by Hito Steyerl and 'The Ground Swallows You' by Matthew Galloway. Describes the content of Steyerl's video work and Galloway's installation which both engage with complex global geopolitical incidents that have received little attention in the mainstream media. Explores the concept of Freeports which are addressed in Steyerl's work and the globalised industrialisation of agriculture in Galloway's work. Describes a newsprint publication by Galloway accompanying the exhibition. |
