Title: Under indigenous eyes
Authors: McMaster, Gerald
Publisher: INZART / The University of Auckland Library = Te Tumu Herenga
Abstract: Explores the presence of indigenous art at two major European exhibitions, Documenta 14 and the Venice Biennale. Argues that "a new critical dialogue emerged among Indigenous artists that sometimes superseded the curatorial logic of the individual shows". Addresses themes of decolonisation, the value of traditional knowledge in the face of hyper-capitalism, and solidarity between Indigenous people and global migrants. Describes Lisa Reihana's work, 'In Pursuit of Venus' (2015-17). Discusses the reversal of subject and agent in the representation of Indigenous people in the work of Lisa Reihana and Tracey Moffatt.
