Blooming new : The rebirth of Reuben Paterson

Abstract

Lucy Hammonds interviews New Zealand artist Reuben Paterson. Introduces the artist describing the establishment of his contemporary art career and a recent shift to New Plymouth following a 2013 residency at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. In the interview Paterson discusses current projects including 'Aroma of Black', which incorporates still-life studies inspired by the colour and symmetry of tivaevae quilts. Speaks to the series 'Black Matters', which explores fireworks, discussing the association between fireworks and flowers. Explores the connection between the 'Black Matters' series and the Black Lives Matter movement. Considers the artist's use of colour and glitter in the works, the connotations of glitter relating to craft, child's play, and drag, and the kinetic impression the medium produces.
