dc.description.abstract | Profiles the late, expatriate artist John Hutton. Discusses the artist's figurative engraved glass work. Introduces Jennifer Conway, Hutton's only living pupil, who in the 1970s learnt glass engraving techniques from Hutton and son, Warwick. Claire Bell discusses the establishment of a studio and mentorship to demonstrate approaches, tools and skills relating to glass engraving. Explains the role Hutton's wife Marigold played in his career as both muse and manager. Explores biographical details about the artist, including his emigration from New Zealand in 1936 and significant commissions overseas in both glass engraving and mural designs. Discusses Hutton's connection with architect Sir Basil Spence, designer of the Coventry Cathedral, for which Hutton designed a suite of 90 panels of engraved glass. Describes the development of Hutton's glass engraving techniques, which achieved a clearer image and a more painterly outcome. | - |
