Abstract: | Reflects on the arrival of wartime refugees and émigrés to New Zealand, particularly during the 1930s, many of whom were artists, photographers, writers and architects influenced by the latest cultural developments in Europe. Talks to Leonard Bell, associate professor of art history at the University of Auckland, lamenting how many of these creatives have been dropped from our art and architectural record. Discusses the content of Bell's newly published book 'Strangers Arrive'. Describes the limitations and restrictions émigrés experienced in New Zealand. Explores the influence of émigrés on art students and early career artists and on the development of Modernism in New Zealand. |
