dc.description.abstract | Profiles New Zealand-born kinetic sculptor and experimental film-maker Len Lye on the occasion of the recent publication of 'The Long Dream Waking: New perspectives on Len Lye', a new book of essays exploring the drivers and influences on Lye's multi-disciplinary practice. Briefly discusses Lye's kinetic sculptures and film work and critical responses to the works. Considers Lye's experiences in Britain and Australia and the influence of Australian Aboriginal and Papuan art. Reflects on the 1977 exhibition 'Kinetic Works' at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Lye's decision to bequeath his archive to the people of New Zealand to be housed at the Govett-Brewster. Broaches ethical concerns regarding the posthumous realisation of the artist's work and the digitisation of his films. | - |
