Abstract: | Examines the current landscape of artist-run spaces in New Zealand and reflects on the history of alternative spaces which emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. Observes the raft of mid-scale galleries and dealers advocating for the kind of ephemeral and difficult work that was once only found in artist-run spaces and questions "where do artist-run spaces fit in the ecology now?" Profiles the Wellington artist-run space MEANWHILE, started by recent graduates from Massey University's College of Creative Arts, Jordana Bragg and Jesse Bowling. Describes the Auckland space captcha which operates out of an art collective's flat. Talks to Mokopōpaki director, Jacob Terre about the Karangahape Road space described as a "commercial proposition". Discusses the multi-platform Hapori, which operates as a print journal, digital download and through physical exhibitions. Comments on Skinroom, a Hamilton-based artist-run-space run by Eliza Webster and Geoffrey Clarke and profiles the more established Dunedin gallery Blue Oyster Art Project Space. Talks to the gallery's current director, Grace Ryder, discussing the sustainable model of administration that has seen the space develop from its opening in 1999. |
