Abstract: Review of Benjamin Work's solo exhibition 'Whenua Fonua 'Enua' 2017, which included a publication with photographic works by Brendan Kitto. Reflects on the use of Tongan kupesi (design), ngatu (Tongan bark cloth) designs, Tongan 'akau ta (war clubs) and an "evolving thread between customary Tongan art and contemporary painting." Mentions Work's East Auckland (Pakuranga) upbringing and his reference to local landmarks in these paintings, including a mound of rocks sourced from Ngāi Tai lands.
