Abstract: | Article reviews the exhibition 'Colin McCahon: On Going Out with the Tide', with a focus on "McCahon's coming to terms with imagery, histories and concepts of significance to Māori", in particular Māori concepts of spirituality, cosmology, and whakapapa (genealogy). Includes discussion of 'Parihaka Triptych' and the representation of leaders-prophets: Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi of Parihaka Pā (Taranaki), and 'Urewera Mural' and the representation of leaders-prophets Te Kooti Arikirangi and Rua Kenana of Te Urewera (Ngāti Tūhoe). Article also mentions critical response to 'The Canoe Tainui' by Ngahuia Te Awekotuku. |
