Abstract: | Article speaks to new TV series Artefact hosted by Dame Anne Salmond and Māori Television. Discusses first episode where Salmond accompanies whānau from Uawa (Tolaga Bay) as they are reunited with their ancestor Paikea, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Article includes discussions around the limitations of artefact as a concept to reflect taonga, and the relations Māori communities have with these taonga as ancestors. Mentions contributions to the show from artists Lisa Reihana and Fiona Pardington. Discusses briefly Rosanna Raymond's tapa (barkcloth) dress 'Backhand Maiden' worn at The Met, and Pardington's photographic work 'The Call of the Huia'. |
