Title: The imagined yesterday
Authors: Hatwell, Adrian
Publisher: INZART / The University of Auckland Library = Te Tumu Herenga
Abstract: Article speaks to the photographic career of Gavin Hipkins, through works in 'The Homely' (2001) and 'The Homely II' (2018) exhibited at City Gallery Wellington and 'The Domain' (2017-18) at The Dowse. Reflects on the artist's exploration of how Pākehā identity is 'forged' through his "touristic look at artefacts", compiling "mundane objects imbued with a sort of nationalistic significance". Includes a conversation with the artist on the images informing 'The Homely II' and achieving a non-linear, disrupted narrative within display of the series. Mentions the artist's range of photographic styles and techniques employed over his career.
Description: 13 colour. Includes exhibition view
