Abstract: Review highlighting two exhibitions at the opening of Te Papa's Toi Art gallery: 'Détour' and 'He Toa Tāera Fashion Activists', which illustrate "a social context of lively critique that is self-reflexive, embraces multiplicity, knows its history, and is in conversation with a wide array of artists". Discusses the works 'Constable Plum Bob' and 'Tiki Tour' by Parekowhai in relation to Colin McCahon's 'Northland Panels' and reflects on the cultural impact of Pacific Sisters, discussing their work 'Kaitiaki with a K; Tāuaolevai Keeper of the water (Tuna)', their "Kaupapa-driven Frocks", and Rosanna Raymond's Ina and Tuna performances.
