Abstract: | Article speaks to the photography practice of Les Cleveland, described as 'an extended mediation on the private mythology, material history and psychosocial landscape of twentieth-century New Zealand. Includes discussion of photo-essay 'The Silent Land' accompanied by a free-verse narrative describing the experience of a journey through the South Island's West Coast. Discusses the works from the photo-essay including 'Farmer's Shed, Otira Gorge', 'Saw doctor, Kupara Sawmill', 'Doug Macalister driving war surplus Bren Carrier', and 'Hong Kong Cafe, Taranaki Street, Wellington'.
