Abstract: Article reflects on the career of George Hubbard, considering his role in the flourishing of contemporary Māori art within the bicultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand. Considers Hubbard's involvement with Cupboard Space, as well as his patronage and friendships. Discusses his curatorial work on a number of exhibitions including 'Maori Art Today' (1986), 'Choice!' (1990), 'Cross-Pollination: A Group Exhibition of Contemporary Maori-Pakeha Art' (1991) and 'Stop Making Sense' (1995). Discusses the controversial exhibition 'Korurangi: New Maori Art' (1995) at Auckland Art Gallery. Mentions Hubbard's unpublished catalogue essay 'Systems of Survival'.
