Abstract: Article speaks to the career of Archibald J. Fisher who was Director of Elam School of Art during the period 1924-1959. Discusses Fisher's new approach and attitude towards New Zealand art, which received public scrutiny following seven works he named worthy in the Auckland Art Gallery's collection. Mentions a popular illustration by Trevor Lloyd depicting the Elam director reacting to the Gallery, which was first published in the New Zealand Herald and later reproduced by Elam student Jane Eyre. Includes historical details about the Gallery's collection and the affect which Fisher would have on Elam and the Auckland art scene.
