Authors: | Inkson, Kerr Browning, Victoria Kirkwood, Jodyanne |
Issue Date: | 22-Aug-2013 |
Abstract: | The case study outlines the history of Otago University, as New Zealand's first university, before discussing the unique culture of the university in the context of New Zealand and Australasian universities. There is also discussion of the changes over time in terms of staff restructuring, new strategic goals and research outputs. The case study focuses on the period during which Graeme Fogelberg was Vice-Chancellor - 1994 to 2004 - and looks at the challenges and solutions during his tenure: For example, the commercialisation of research; Internationalisation; marketing and government funding of EFTS (Equivalent Full-Time Students) and the importance of PBRF (Performance-Based Research Funding) are just some of the aspects discussed. Overall the case study gives a valuable insight into how a university needs to stay competitive after the legislative reforms of the late 1980's required universities to be more 'business-like' |
