Abstract: How do I manage this? Victoria asked herself as Heather left the room. It was December 2008, and Heather, one of her direct reports, had asked if she could work from home for part of the week, starting in the new year. Under the department's Flexible Working Arrangements policy, Heather, a relatively senior manager with a team reporting to her, was entitled to apply for a variation to her working arrangements. Victoria had said she would consider it. This case should prompt plenty of discussion as the situation will be familiar to many, either as a person seeking flexible working hours or as a colleague of someone who has them. The story can be considered from a number of perspectives including that of the human resources manager. It raises issues of equity and the psychological contract between employer and employee.
