Abstract: Martin Edmond discusses the work of John Pule, in particular the two main influences Pule has mentioned on his work which are 'hiapo' (Niuean tapa cloth) and the New Zealand state house. His paintings from the 1990s, which often resemble hiapo, are a peculiar hybrid of Polynesian and European imagery, making Pule one of the most distinct and idiosyncratic voices to emerge from the Pacific diaspora.
