Article discusses visual representation of the female body, linking critical theorist Laura Mulvey to works by Jan Nigro; 'The Object Series' (1974-75) by Alexis Hunter'; 'Gut reaction' (1981) by Di Ffrench; filmmaker Merata Mita and Māori women's art; and 'hardening' (2017) by Aliyah Winter. Reflects on Winter's video-based work speaking to the story of Dr Hjelmar von Danneville, and includes a discussion of gender, identity and transgression. Mentions 1986 exhibition 'Karanga Karanga' as a space for Māori women artists, with a quote from Merata Mita.-
