Authors: | Byrt, Anthony Parekōwhai, Michael |
Publisher: | INZART / The University of Auckland Library = Te Tumu Herenga |
Abstract: | Article discusses Michael Parekōwhai's 'Détour' (2018) at Te Papa, which takes as its starting point Marcel Duchamp's 'Boîte-en-valise' (1961) held within the museum's collection. Discusses Parekōwhai's response through 'Forest Etiquette' (2018), a structure which becomes a provisional framework for several works from Te Papa's collection, including Colin McCahon's 'Northland Panels' (1958) and a Francis Hodgkins work. Essay appends writing by Parekōwhai discussing 'Détour'. Includes discussion of Theo Schoon's toi moko images, selection of poutoti (stilts), and 'building a landscape' in the work 'Forest Etiquette'. |
