Abstract

Author reviews a selection of exhibitions in Wellington that mark 125 years since women gained the vote in New Zealand. Includes a review of 'The earth looks upon us/Ko Papatūānuku te matua o te tangata' (2018) at Adam Art Gallery which exhibits a younger generation of Māori women artists Nova Paul, Ngahuia Harrison, Ana Iti and Raukura Turei, who explore their relationships with whanau and whenua. Discusses 'Embodied Knowledge' (2018) at The Dowse, featuring works by Christine Hellyar, Maureen Lander, Vivian Lynn, Pauline Rhodes and the Estate of L. Budd. Looks at 'Margins & Satellites' (2018) at Enjoy featuring work by social historian Ella Sutherland who distils her research on low-budget publications made by gay and lesbian activist collectives from the 1970s-1990s.
